The year is sliding into Spring and you want to know the hottest hardwood floor trends. Well we all know that hardwood has a timeless look, but shades, styles, and size are always changing from year to year. Read on and we’ll give you the scoop on the latest and greatest here at Floor Coverings International of Largo and Seminole, FL.
Mixed Wood Species
Have a new house but want that rustic “log cabin” look with your floorboards? Easy! Plan to install hardwood flooring using a variety of wood species, rather than a standard, single species floor. This look is fantastic because it allows your floor to have different tones and hues in the wood. You can even mix and match wood grains to achieve unique patterns of burls and knots. This will give your home that rustic, countryside look you always wanted! However, you’ll have to go with a laminate or engineered hardwood rather than traditional solid planks, as different types of solid wood react differently to temperature and humidity. One wood species may expand and settle differently than another, which could cause cracking and decay.
Reclaimed Wood Flooring
A different hardwood flooring style that is trending right now is reclaimed (also known as recycled) wood. Reclaimed hardwood flooring not only gets you the rustic, barn look, but it is also a way to be eco-friendly by saving quality, old-growth wood from the scrap yard. Reclaimed wood has a distinctively distressed, wide plank look, due to the production methods used during the industrial revolution. The boards are wider than contemporary planks because they were produced from older trees with broader trunks than those in use today, and the previous years of use contribute to the characteristically weathered quality of reclaimed hardwoods. You can even mix and match to get an eclectic look, similar to the look of mixed species floors! Reputable dealers of reclaimed lumber will be able to provide a full history of where the wood was used and what it’s story is, making for a great conversation starter at dinner parties!
Wide Plank Flooring
Wide plank hardwood flooring is another burgeoning trend. For a plank to be considered wide, it must be five or more inches across. Wide plank flooring is available in solid wood, laminate, and luxury vinyl. Traditional, solid hardwood always looks beautiful, but it’s generally the more expensive option of the three. Laminate is a great option because it comes in many styles and shades. It is also a reasonably priced option and comes in a wider range of custom styles than real wood. Luxury vinyl is also a fantastic option! It will look and feel like real wood, and if you want a really wide plank, vinyl boards are usually six inches or wider. It’s also a good choice for people who have pets or kids because it won’t scratch as easily as solid wood and is very easy to clean!
