Fun floors with printed patterns, like tiles and laminates, can present some interesting challenges to homeowners. How do you match unusual prints to the patterns on your furniture and other furnishings in the room? Knowing how to integrate unusual designs into your home’s flooring can help you make the most of your home’s interior design. Here’s what you need to know.
Let the Colors Be Your Guide
If you’ve selected your flooring first and now have to decorate the room around the flooring, let the colors in the flooring be your guide. The dominant color, which is the color that appears most often in the pattern, can form the basis of the color palette in the rest of the room.
Likely there will be other colors, accent colors, scattered throughout the pattern. Pick up these colors in smaller pieces of furniture and accessories elsewhere in the room. For example, suppose you choose to install a tile floor with blue and teal dominant colors, and a spattering of gold accent colors. Consider painting the walls in your room a lighter shade of teal, and paint the kitchen table blue. Use gold kitchen towels and a yellow clock on the wall to pick up the accent colors throughout the tile.
Don’t Worry Too Much About Combining Patterns
Some people believe that multiple patterns can’t be combined in the same space. However, you can combine patterns in one room if large blocks of solid color separate the patterns.
For example: suppose you installed a bold patterned tile on the floor of your kitchen and then installed a subtler patterned countertop in the same room. If the cabinets between the counters and the floors were painted in a solid matching color, then the countertops and the floors would likely not clash.
Check Out Samples Before Making Your Decision
Always get samples of your flooring of choice before deciding to buy and install new flooring. Take the samples home and place them on your floors to look at them in the broader context of the room. This will help you decide more definitely if the flooring is right for your home. If possible, get multiple samples of different kinds of patterns to help you make your decision. At Floor Coverings International Seminole we even offer in-home consultations, and our mobile showroom will bring our extensive collection of flooring samples right to your door.
