When you’re choosing a hardwood for your Clearwater home, the first two things on your mind are probably affordability and looks. The goal is to find a material that looks upscale, but won’t break the bank, right?
Of course, there’s one other basic requirement to keep in mind: how long will your floors last? With hardwood, you know you’re getting a denser, more durable material than softwoods like spruce and cedar – but even among hardwoods, there’s a hierarchy of toughness.
And within that hierarchy, hickory reigns supreme (at least as far as domestic woods go – more on that to come). Read on to learn from the Floor Coverings International Seminole experts why hickory might be the perfect material for the floors in your home.
Exactly How Strong Is Hickory?
Officially speaking, hickory is the 46th hardest wood in the world. That might not sound very impressive, but let’s put it another way: hickory is the hardest domestic wood available in the United States. Though oak, cherry, and maple are probably more common for floors, hickory is in a class of its own.
The Janka Hardness Scale, which measures how much force is required to embed half of a small steel ball into a piece of wood, is the best way of finding out how hard a hardwood really is. Hickory clocks in at 1,820 pounds of force – over 400 pounds more than Maple, the next hardest domestic wood. Red Oak, which is by far the most common hardwood for floors, has a Janka rating of 1,290 – still impressive – but certainly overshadowed by the burly beauty of hickory.
Other Benefits of Hickory

- Resists scratches, scrapes, and dents
- Reduced risk of warping in humidity
- Available in a variety of shades and stains
- Brightens up dark rooms with high luster
