Wide plank—hardwood flooring where individual boards are wider than 5 inches—is making a comeback. Gone are the days where 2¼ and 3-inch wide boards are your only two options. At Floor Coverings International Seminole, our customers are increasingly opting for 5, 8, and even 12-inch planks.
Clearwater residents enjoy the rustic appeal of wide plank flooring. It harks back to pre-industrial America: a bygone era before the mass manufacturing of hardwood flooring. A young United States was strewn with old growth forests. These trees—some hundreds of years old—were used to build homes. Hardwood floors back then were made as wide as possible, so as to save wood. Floors were more often than not unfinished and at variable widths. Today, wide plank flooring serves as an enduring reminder of the industrious and adventurous American spirit.
Consistent vs. Random Width
Many flooring manufacturers sell “random width” plank flooring. This is not truly random; rather, planks are sold in packages with a variety of widths within a certain range, say 4 inches to 8 inches. Random width plank hardwood is great for making a space feel authentic. Consistent widths are great for formal spaces and modern aesthetics. The wider the planks, the more “rural” your hardwood flooring will feel.
You can find wide-plank flooring in nearly every material, from pine to cherry. It is available as an engineered or solid hardwood, and it can be stained to complement any décor. Some homeowners choose to use varying plank tones. This creates a look straight out of the 19th century, when it was common practice to use reclaimed wood from multiple sources.
